Mary Rumble Petyarre was born in 1957 in the Utopia region of Central Australia. Utopia is located approximately 270km north east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. As one of the Utopia artists, Mary is well known for her Bush Medicine Leaves paintings. Created with confident brush strokes, Mary is the sister of Katie Rumble and her extended family includes well renowned artists Gloria Petyarre and Gracie Morton Pwerle. Mary paints a number of Dreamings including ‘Mountain Devil Dreaming’, ‘Bush Medicine Plant’ and ‘Body Paint Designs’. Arnkerrthe, Mountain, or Thorny Devil Lizard, and Kangaroo Hole. Kangaroo Hole is a painting of the big hole that Kangaroos dig when they are looking for water. The Waterhole was made by the kangaroo digging in the ground with his tail to make a rockhole. The Kangaroo is an important totem to Mary and her people.
